As of 1 January 2026, the rules on temporary parental benefit have been expanded. Now, both parents may take time off with temporary parental benefits for the same child and period to:
- Accompany their seriously ill child to the doctor
- Attend doctor’s visits or prescribed treatment as part of their child’s treatment
In families with more than two parents, multiple parents may also take time off with temporary parental benefits for the same child and period to:
- Attend courses to learn how to care for their child
- Attend school or preschool meetings linked to the child’s illness or disability
- Take part in social services’ assessments of their child’s need for support
iuno's opinion
The amendment supplements the existing rules for taking time off with temporary parental leave benefits and therefore adds to the scenarios in which companies must be aware that employees can take time off.
iuno recommends that companies review their employee handbooks, parental leave policies or contracts to determine whether they need updating.
